CHARACTER INFORMATION
Character Name: Hiro Hamada
Age: 14
Canon: Big Hero 6
Canon Point: While flying back to his garage after discovering Yokai's identity
Character Information: http://disney.wikia.com/wiki/Hiro_Hamada
Personality: In many ways, Hiro is a typical teenage boy: fun-loving, cocky, and often impulsive. But beyond that cheeky grin and skinny frame are the brain of a genius and the heart of a hero. Fiercely loyal and loving toward his family, it takes him time to warm up to other people due to his being bullied from a very young age for his brilliance. His sensitive, compassionate nature became hidden behind layers of sarcasm and forced overconfidence, though situations often cause hints of his true shyness and gentle heart to show through. Hiro's brain seems to be both his biggest asset and (in some ways) his greatest weakness; while thinking of creative new ways to approach situations is a definite strength, the bigger the plan the bigger the proverbial explosion when things go awry.
Before his brother Tadashi's death, Hiro rarely thought of the consequences of his actions, living only for the thrill of bot fights and the money he could make. Though he felt badly for interrupting his Aunt Cass's workday at the Lucky Cat Cafe, he'd barely gotten back into his bedroom before looking for another bot fight. As much as he loves his family, especially his brother, Hiro always related better to machines, things he made with his own hands, things that made him feel like he had control over something in his own life. Very likely, this is his way of coping with the death of his parents, even though he brushes off Tadashi's concerns by remarking that he was only three at the time and doesn't remember them well. It seems to be one of his biggest coping mechanisms, playing off things that hurt him deeply as no big deal and focusing instead on having fun with his bots. Tadashi was able to redirect Hiro's intelligence and drive to something more constructive by showing him ways to be even more creative with his skills while still keeping Hiro in his comfort zone. Hiro is very obviously a perfect example of why genius needs a healthy outlet.
With Tadashi gone, Hiro collapses back into a more withdrawn state. His motivation is strongly hinged on his state of mind, and when Hiro crashes from his mood, he crashes HARD. He mopes in his room, giving up even on the admission to SFIT he worked so hard to earn. He won't eat or leave his room, barely even musters up the energy to talk to his aunt when she comes up to visit him. Cass is suffering over Tadashi's loss just as much, but Hiro can't pull out of his own head enough to comfort her. He doesn't finish watching the message from his friends (the timer bar at the bottom of the video isn't all the way at the end) because their compassion only drives home even harder how much he misses Tadashi. Inventing and bot fighting, both things he used to bury his pain before, aren't enough this time. It takes the compassion of his new friends to pull him back into living. But his returned drive is focused in a new, serious direction: the determination to bring his brother's killer to justice. That determination is so strong, it brings the other tech students into his circle, like planets orbiting a bright sun. He accomplishes some of his most inspired creations with their inspiration and help, and with a common goal they start to bring him back out of his shell once again.
It's when Hiro discovers the identity of Yokai that his darkest nature comes to the fore. Someone he respected proves to be the source of his greatest misery, and the rage he feels in the face of that truth turns him vicious and vindictive. There's no playfulness, no cockiness, only cold fury and an unwavering need to commit an act that he never would've dreamed of doing before. He doesn't hesitate to order his brother's gentle creation Baymax to destroy a human life, not even an instant of thought before he removes Baymax's health care chip to turn the robot into a murder machine. This is a Hiro capable of no remorse, fixated on a single dark goal. He doesn't even care that his friends are injured trying to stop Baymax and willingly leaves them behind when they stand in the way of his revenge.
Of course, he rediscovers his morality and his sense of compassion with the help of Baymax and the memory of his beloved brother, but that comes later. When he appears in Ryslig, it will still be in the throes of his rage and pain....
5-10 Key Character Traits: Brilliant, cocky, impulsive, sarcastic, shy but good at hiding it, free-spirited, deeply emotional
Would you prefer a monster that FITS your character’s personality, CONFLICTS with it, or EITHER? Either
Opt-Outs: Wendigo, troll, werebear, minotaur, arachne
Roleplay Sample:
Whoa, talk about weird. This new place, wherever it is? Definitely a far cry from San Fransokyo. Hiro almost forgets about how cold and sore he is, huddled into his wet fitted shirt and shorts-- just where did his armor go?-- and hugging himself for warmth as he wanders away from that weird clinic. At least they could've given him some clean, dry clothes! Maybe they just don't have anything small enough to fit his skinny frame, and really, Hiro doesn't like the idea of running around in a hospital gown with his bare butt hanging out.
This whole town-- Vandare, the doctor called it?-- looks like something from an amusement park. Like a themed zone or whatever, maybe? It's kinda old-fashioned, the people walking around in clothing Hiro had only seen in movies. If not for being disoriented and a bit worried over his scratches and the odd feeling in his gut and most of all Callaghan getting away, he might find himself wanting to explore a bit more. Right now, though, he needs to find Baymax and get back on Callaghan's trail. At least his fury's cooling a little after the past hour or so of being pretty darn confused.
"Hey, um... excuse me?" He approaches a man and woman standing by a street corner, talking to one another quietly. They turn at the sound of his voice, their expressions gentle. Maybe they're used to helping wet, scrawny, injured kids? "You guys seen a big squishy white robot?"
The couple glance at one another again, confusion seeping into the concern, and tell him that no, they don't know what a "robot" is.
"He looks like... well... d'you know what a marshmallow is? He kinda looks like a giant marshmallow with these two beady black eyes...." He makes circles with his thumbs and index fingers and holds them around his eyes like eyeglass frames. "... and a line between them. His name's Baymax, he's a health care companion."
Still they give him confused looks and shakes of their heads, and Hiro blows an annoyed breath upward through damp bangs.
"Guess not. Okay, can you at least tell me where I can dry off and get some clean clothes? And maybe some answers about how to get back home?"
